Abdurrahman bin Awf and His Generosity

He is one of the  Blessed Companions (Ashara Mubashara)

Abdurrahman bin Awf was engaged in trade from his young age. For this reason, he would go to various places for trade. In the age of Jahiliyya, he was known as an honest person who did not drink alcohol and had good morals. His old friendship with Abu Bakr enabled him to become a Muslim thanks to him. Abdurrahman b. Awf, because of the pressure and persecution of the Makkan polytheists migrated to Abyssinia first and then to Madinah. Rasulallah (pbuh) established a bond of brotherhood (muâhât) between him and Sa'd b. Rabi’.

He participated in all wars with the Prophet. He had a lot of heroism in Badr. In Uhud, he suffered more than twenty wounds, and he was lame due to wounds in his foot. During the Tabuk Expedition the Prophet attended a prayer in which he was the imam.

Abu Bakr, consult him during his caliphate. During his illness before his death, Abu Bakr first told him about the idea of choosing Omar as the caliph.  Abdurrahman b. Awf continued this duty also in the caliphate of Omar. Companions used to convey the issues they hesitated to present to the caliph through him. Due to this close relationship with Omar, they would sometimes wander the streets of Medina with him at night and check the order. During this period, Abdurrahman bin Awf was also the pilgrimage emirate and the baitulmâl guard.

When Omar was stabbed by a zoroastrian slave, He appointed Abdurrahman b. Awf as imam and formed a six-person council to elect the new caliph and included him.

Halifa Omar was going to Damascus. It was heard that there was a plague disease in Damascus. Some of those who were with him said, "Let's not go to Damascus." Some of them said:

- Let's not run away from the fate of Allahu ta'ala.

Thereupon, the Caliph said:

- Let's escape from the fate of Allahu ta'ala to his fate again, let's not enter the city. If one of you has a meadow and a rocky place, he sends his flock to whichever one he sends, it will be sent with the discretion of Allahu ta'âlâ.

Then he called Abdurrahman bin Awf and asked:

- What is your opinion?

- I heard the The Messenger of Allah said, "Do not enter a place where there is a plague and do not go from one place where there is a plague to another, do not run from there."

The Caliph did not enter Damascus, saying, "Alhamdulillah, my word was in accordance with hadiths".

HIS LOVE OF RASULULLAH

Abdurrahman bin Awf always cried after the death of the Messenger of Allah, remembering the days he spent with him. He used to say that the world had no significance for him, after he had lost his conversations.

One day, a meal was served somewhere. He was also fasting that day. He was asked to tell a memory just at the time of iftar. He immediately started telling his memory:

"When Mus'ab bin Umayr, who was better than me, was martyred, we shrouded him with a piece of cloth. When we covered his head, his feet remained open, when we covered his feet, his head remained uncovered.

Then Hamza was martyred. He was far superior to me too. We also buried him under difficult conditions. They left the world, though they were better than me. Then the world door opened for us. He cried saying “We have achieved various kinds of blessings. How are we going to account for these?”

He forgot that he was fasting and did not even eat the iftâr meal.
